Theo Rigby’s short film Sin País has won the Bronze Medal in the 38th Annual Student Academy Awards in the Documentary Category. It will play Saturday, Sept 24th at 1:30 p.m. at the Angelika before a screening of the immigration documentary Tony and Janina’s American Wedding. Rigby will talk about how to make a good film website, using innovative storytelling on the web and using video and stills–trans-media, multi-media, interactive, and participatory elements. Changing Landscapes of Independent Media
Distributor Jacob Wolters of Oscilloscope, Gerard Roxburgh, of Once I was a Champion, Nick DeMartino, a transmedia specialist, and Ya’Ke Smith, winner of the 2010 Texas Show, will serve on the panel on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. Moderated by Bart Weiss, Artistic Director of Dallas Video Festival. Have you heard nothing but bad things about Final Cut Pro X? Well, Bart Weiss is here to tell you differently. He is giving a Final Cut Pro X workshop on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 pm. in the Angelika Cafe. Admission with any Festival Pass.
Experimental filmmaker Kerry Laitala will facilitate a workshop on cinegrams on Saturday, Sept 24 at 10 a.m. at Owen Fine Arts Center at SMU on the 2nd Floor, room, 2625, 6101 Bishop Blvd. Admission is a $10 suggested donation. High school students are free. Participants need to bring the following with them: a flashlight, and rubber dishwashing gloves. You can learn more about Laitala workshops at her website. SF Weekly called Laitala the “Best Filmmaker without a Pixar contract (yet).” Her work is colorful and innovative, showcasing some of the most fascinating creativity that can be found in the world of film and video. During the festival there is a half hour block dedicated to Ms Laitala’s work, Saturday, Sept 24th at 7:45 p.m. at the Angelika.
How to Create Child Friendly Apps
Brandon Oldenberg of Moonbot Productions will present a workshop on child friendly apps for the iPad. Oldenberg co-created the digital storybook, The Fantastic Flying Books Of Mr. Morris Lessmore with award-winning children’s book author William Joyce. The app has received rave reviews and is a groundbreaking form of literature and art that combines moving images with the feel of a children’s picture book. Children are invited to a demonstration of the book app on Sunday, Sept. 25 at noon at Hyena’s Comedy Club, next to the Angelika. The workshop for adults will follow. Admission with Festival Pass.
Nick DeMartino has been a major part of the American Film Institute as its Senior Vice President for Media and Technology. He specializes in providing industry leadership in new media and constantly pushes the innovations of media in our country for many different fields including independent film, cable television, and digital video production. Mr DeMartino will present his workshop on Transmedia on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Hyena’s Comedy Club, next to the Angelika. Admission with any Festival Pass.
